Board wise to table Rustin project

My congratulations to the West Chester School Board for deciding to not fund the Rustin sports lighting project at this time. Don't get me wrong ... I strongly support high school sports activity and have said so in these pages, but we must face some painful economic realities that some school boards around here ignore.

Social Security recipients and most employees in the private sector have not realized any pay increases over the recent past, are not likely to see any for the foreseeable future, and they face declining buying power. Why do some on the taxpayer dole believe that they are immune to these same realities?

It is time for elected officials at all levels of public service to appreciate the economic consequences that they impose on their constituents. I recognize that many local government officials are uncompensated for their services and voting them out of office carries no financial penalty. However, I also believe that if they deny the wishes of the electorate, they will be shunned as irresponsible spenders that care nothing about their neighbors' financial well-being.

True, they claim the intellectual/moral high ground that they know what is best, but this elitist argument has lost credibility ... ask Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia voters.
