Judge William Mahon
Judge Mahon was born in New York in 1953 and has resided in Chester County since 1984. He obtained his B.A. degree from Fordham University in 1975 and his J.D. degree from the University of Dayton Law School in 1979 where he was President of the law school and was awarded the American Jurisprudence Award.
After serving as a law clerk for the United States District Court in Ohio for two years and working in the general practice of law in New York for three years, Judge Mahon came to Chester County as an Assistant District Attorney in 1984. He remained in that position until 1987, when he became associated with and eventually a partner in the firm of Lamb, Windle & McErlane, P.C., where he was engaged in the general practice of law with emphasis on criminal and civil litigation.
Judge Mahon was elected to the Court of Common Pleas in November 1999 and took the oath of office in January 2000. He was assigned to a wide-ranging caseload involving civil, criminal, domestic and zoning law matters. He now presides (for the past 8 years) over the Chester County Treatment Court, an innovative pre/post-trial program for non-violent drug offenders, which stresses accountability and productivity for individuals coping with drug addiction. He also established the Chester County Mental Health Court which assists those with a severe mental illness who are arrested because of their illness. He also is assigned a full criminal caseload.
Judge Mahon was formerly active in a wide variety of community activities, including the Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry, MECA of Chester County, Inc. (Mission for Educating Children with Autism), Community Service Council of Chester County, Camp Cadet of Chester County and Adult Care of Chester County.
Judge Mahon is a member of the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges and the Pennsylvania and Chester County Bar Associations. He served by appointment of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on its IOLTA Board from 2003-2006 and currently serves the Supreme Court on its statewide Problem Solving Court Advisory Committee. He also serves on the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency’s County Systems Subcommittee. He is a member of the Chester County Criminal Justice Advisory Board and Vice President of the Pennsylvania Association of Drug Court Professionals.
Judge Mahon is endorsed in his 2009 retention election by the Chester County Police Chiefs Association and by the Chester County Fraternal Order of Police.
He is married to his wife, Jeannette.
