Meehan gets backing from Romney

BOSTON (AP) — Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is endorsing fellow Republican Pat Meehan in his bid for the 7th District congressional seat.

Romney, a former GOP presidential candidate and possble front-runner in 2012, announced his support for the former Delco district attorney and two other Republicans running in Pa. races on Tuesday in Boston.

In a statement, the 2008 Republican presidential contender said he backs U.S. Senate candidate Pat Toomey, congressional special election candidate Tim Burns and congressional challenger Pat Meehan.

Toomey is challenging Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter. Burns is running to replace the late Rep. John Murtha. And Meehan is running against Rep. Joe Sestak.

Romney's political action committee sent $5,000 to Toomey, and $2,500 each to the others.

Romney is weighing a 2012 challenge to President Barack Obama. He is using his Free and Strong America PAC to support like-minded candidates and seed potential supporters for a second White House race.

He has recently endorsed candidates in Ohio, Missouri and California.
