Lentz Misleads Voters About Tax Vote
Claims he did not vote to increase taxes; the facts say otherwise
DREXEL HILL, PA – Pat Meehan’s campaign for Congress ripped into State Rep. Bryan Lentz for misleading voters about his vote to increase taxes in the state legislature last year.
In a news story published in yesterday’s Delaware County Daily Times, Lentz claimed Meehan’s criticisms of his vote to increase state spending and raise taxes last year were untrue, stating “the budget we passed out of the House was a ‘no tax’ budget.”
But various news accounts show Lentz’ claims are untrue. Capitolwire reported on the vote October 2: “As the budget impasse continued into its 94th day, the House Democratic majority moved a billion-dollar tax hike bill through the chamber Friday.” The bill passed by a 103-98 margin with Lentz supporting it. (Source: Capitolwire, House passes state revenue plan, with $1 billion in new taxes, 10/2/09).
Even Governor Ed Rendell called the vote a tax increase, noting that the tax vote actually delayed the completion of budget negotiations. "It (The House vote) is bringing us further away from having a signed budget," said Rendell. "For many of them (lawmakers), this is the first tax vote they had to pass," he said. “Lentz needs to start being honest with voters,” said Meehan campaign manager Bryan Kendro. “Lentz cannot hide from his own voting record and his support of tax increases. The record is very clear: Lentz supported nearly $1 billion in tax increases to fund state spending during the budget process last year. We don’t need another vote for hiking taxes in Congress. We need to cut spending, cut the size of government, and allow working families to keep more of their hard-earned money. Lentz is part of the problem, not the answer.”
