County voters match voting statewide

Despite the suspense that accompanied the Democratic senatorial primary and the enthusiastic hope of many conservatives and tea partiers that Berks County State Rep. Sam Rohrer could pull off an upset against Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett in the Republican Gubernatorial primary, voter turnout in Chester County on Tuesday was low.

Twenty-three percent of the county's registered voters went to the polls — that's 64,748 out of 276,450. Among Republicans, 35,700 voted, or 24 percent of the total registered Republicans. Among Democrats 29,048 voted, or 23 percent of the total registered Democrats.

Except in a few instances, the tendencies of county voters matched the tendencies of voters statewide.

One notable exception was in the 6th Congressional District Democratic Primary. Across the district, Reading area physician Manan Trivedi squeaked by with 50.8 percent of the vote. But he got just 33 percent in the district's Chester County votes. The district also includes chunks of Berks and Montgomery counties.

Former newspaper editorial writer Doug Pike, who recently moved to Paoli, got 67 percent of the Chester County vote, even though the county Democratic committee had endorsed Trivedi.

The final numbers for Chester County in the 6th District Democratic Primary were Pike, 10,240 votes, and Trivedi, 5,098 votes.

In most other races, the majority of county voters picked the statewide winners. The following numbers represent the final Chester

County vote counts, as of Wednesday, when all precincts had been counted. All numbers are unofficial until certified by the county board of elections.

In the Republican 6th Congressional District Primary, U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach, R-6th of West Pikeland, got 15,633 votes, or 79 percent; Patrick Henry Sellers, of Wallace, received 4,084 votes, or 21 percent.

In the Democratic Senatorial primary, U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak far outperformed U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter. Sestak, D-7th, of Edgmont, got 17,448 votes, or 60 percent of the total, while Specter got 11,377 votes, or 39 percent of the total.

In the Republican Senatorial Primary, former U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey trounced Western Pennsylvania conservative activist Peg Luksik, getting 29,452 votes, or 86 percent of the total, to Luksik's 4,721 votes, or 14 percent.

In the Republican Gubernatorial Primary, Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett received 19,983 votes, or 57 percent of the total, to Bucks County State Rep. Sam Rohrer's 14,920 votes, or 43 percent. Statewide, Corbett did better, getting 69 percent of the vote to Rohrer's 31 percent.

In the Democratic Gubernatorial Primary, in which four candidates were competing, Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato was the clear winner, getting 9,814 votes, or 35 percent. Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel came in second, with 8,833 votes, or 32 percent. Philadelphia State Sen. Anthony Williams received 6,087 votes, or 22 percent, and Pennsylvania Auditor General Jack Wagner received 3,131 votes, or 11 percent.
